How can we manage when there is a “communication expression” conflict?
“ Man is by nature a social animal, and skills such as getting along with people are left pretty much to chance, or to the supposedly inherent social nature we all possess. A common attitude is that a person either “has it” or “doesn’t” when it come to relating well with others” – Erickson & Company
One of the hardest skills to learn is, “how to effectively communicate with others”. To be an effective communicator there are skills we must learn, it’s my opinion (it may not be yours) many of us seek to educate ourselves in a career but leave out the most important ingredient to our success, and that’s how are we going to get along with people? Developing interactive people skills is a key fundamental factor to our success in any relationship, family, children, lovers, community, at work and on the government and worldwide level.
“Communication expressions” are the basic ways we interact in our environment. This is how we influence others in the way they think”.
Well, that seems like a lot to think about, but isn’t it true in many cases if we were going to be honest. There are 4 common styles of communication. When you understand your own “expression”, you will see how you come across to others.
1. Administrator (red) - The act of power, To dominate, To demand (My way or the highway!)
2. Examiner (green) - Detailed, (I can give you the answer when I have time to think it through, then you will have the answer in complete detail.)
3. Adviser (yellow) – A person who speaks for the rights of others. (How can I fix this and make it better, I want to help?)
4. The booster (blue) – To make easy or less difficult (Come on guys, is there a way we can get along and just make this fun instead of difficult?)
Do you get the picture a little better now? The fact is…we really like are own way of communicating and want to be heard. When you understand who you are and your “communication expression”, you will better understand why you have an affect on others positive -or- negative. My expression is the, “the booster” I just can’t see why everything needs to be so stressed…I mean really, what is so hard about this, I get it… why don’t you? I understand why I can drive a “examiner” crazy, it’s because I see the big picture…lets just get on with it! However, the “examiner” thinks I’m nuts because, I didn’t take the time to think it out carefully…end of story!
No wonder relationships can be a bit of a mess! Let me point out that all these forms of “communication expressions” are perfect…we need them all, don’t we! So how do we get along? How do we get what we want? The issues that we have are due to the lack of flexibility by all parties.
Quote – “years ago an ancient scholar admonished individuals in very few well-chosen words to “Know thyself.” This very wise advice is the basic key to gain discerning communications skills!
How can we manage when there is a “communication expression” conflict? How adaptable should we be to others? Do you want to have a pleasant work environment? Do you want to connect with others? Do you want to be successful and gain from All people? Then we must self-educate ourselves so we can control the way we communicate to others for mutual profit. Sorry to say this is easier said than done, but when you “get it” I promise it can change your life,
Step back and imagine you being in a, management position with the knowledge of “communication expression”. You can begin to change your team environment, by communicating in the language your team members understand. You will also have the knowledge, to delegate responsibility to the correct person for the task which needs to be completed.
Learning to communicate effectively can take you from frustration to acquisition. It will save you years of difficulty and possible defeat!
Because my “communication expression” is “the booster”
I just had to end this post with some fun! I have always loved Dilbert, my husband and I get the biggest laugh when we read the Sunday newspaper.
Learn yourself and be successful!
